On the Job: Replacing a Failed Sewer Line
This is what a sewer line replacement actually looks like: a True Plumbers crew on a real Central Florida job, opening the ground and setting new pipe where a failed line used to be.
Why sewer lines fail here
Central Florida is hard on buried pipe. Tree roots hunt for water and find the joints; sandy soil shifts and settles under lines until they belly or separate; and the cast iron drains common in homes built before the mid-1970s simply corrode from the inside after decades of service. Older neighborhoods also still have clay pipe, whose joints roots treat as an open door.
Warning signs your main line is going
- Multiple slow drains at once - one slow sink is a sink problem, three is a main line problem
- Gurgling from toilets or floor drains when other fixtures run
- Sewage smell indoors or out, or a persistently soggy, extra-green strip in the yard
- Backups that return soon after every cabling - the cable is drilling through a problem, not removing it
Camera first, shovel second
No one should sell you a sewer replacement without showing you the inside of your own pipe. A camera inspection locates the exact failure and its depth, and determines whether the fix is a spot repair of one section or the full run you see in this video. It is the difference between surgery with imaging and surgery by guesswork.
